There are a number of Thicknesser planers available on the market, however, they all consist of three elements: a set of feed in and feed out rollers which are designed to draw the board through the machine, a cutter head which is used to cut the surface of the board and contains the cutting knives, and a table which is fully adjustable in order to select the desired thickness of the board.

Woodturning lathes use an adjustable horizontal rail which is known as the tool rest, which is between the material and the operator and accommodates shaping tools. These shaping tools are usually handheld, and in woodwork its common practice to use sandpaper against the spinning object in order to create a smooth surface. There are certain varieties of woodturning lathes which are used to create items such as bowls and plates.
